I Was Going to Say...

That Anna is her sister's...sister. But then things changed.

Anna was "inconsolably" fussy for most of the day yesterday. She took little cat naps, ONLY if someone was holding her. The morning started out okay, but Daddy and I were scheduled to return to the "Crazy Fun Joy Band" at church, and that's where things got...well, complicated.

We were scheduled to rehearse at 10:00, but by about 9:30, Anna was ready for a nap. I suggested that we pack up and go to church early, so she could nap there, rather than getting her to sleep at home, then transferring her to the carseat. (She HATES the carseat....much like her sister did at this age!) Daddy thought that sounded like a plan, so we loaded up and went to church.

My plan started out wonderfully. Anna was asleep by the time we got to church, so I decided to take her right to the nursery. (We would've kept her with us for rehearsal, then just dropped her off in the nursery for the actual service.) Miss Jackie was pretty busy, so we didn't have much of a chance to "introduce" Anna, but then again, Jackie had Adele ages ago, so at least she knew our family. We plopped Anna (still strapped into her carseat) in a crib, covered her up, and went on our way.

About 5 minutes after leaving her, we got a call saying that Anna had woken up and was "inconsolable"-yup... that sounds like my kid. I went and got her (Jackie said she would've tried to get her back to sleep, but they were so busy (and noisy) that she couldn't take Anna to a quiet room all by herself, and she didn't want to let such a young baby cry. I personally think that she remembered Adele pretty clearly and knew that she didn't stand a chance at quieting her down!). What do you know, she fell asleep almost instantly in my arms. She slept through the entire rehearsal, and when it was time for the service, transferred nicely back into her carseat. We decided to keep her in the sanctuary, and put her in a pew next to Chris, one of the other singers' husbands.

That went well...until the service was just about to start. Chris frantically tried to catch my gaze...sleeping beauty was waking up! I went and got her and hurried back to my microphone-she could sing the first two songs with me :) (Everyone in the congregation watched her grow in my belly, so I didn't figure they'd mind if she came to sing with me, right?) Surprisingly, she just snuggled into me and let me bounce her for the songs. (I noticed lots of people smiling at me, too). She was about to howl just as the set was wrapping up, so I high-tailed it out of the sanctuary as soon as we finished playing.

From then on, she was not a happy camper. "Inconsolable" pretty much summed up the day. She would only nap in my arms, and only for short periods of time. She nursed on and off ALL day long.

At some point in the afternoon, the whole family was outside. I said to Daddy, "You know, she's turning out to be just like her sister after all." (You see, for a little while, I *thought* she was my angel baby...happy or at least content most of the time, she was a pretty good sleeper, and DIDN'T nurse every hour on the dot...) Daddy agreed, and I went on to say how I had been fooling myself thinking that she was "easy." She is, in fact, her sister's....well...sister. We discussed how she does take better naps than Adele did, and her feedings are more spaced out...but the times when she's not sleeping or eating are just as fussy. And that's kind of hard on us. It's pretty much impossible to take her anywhere, because she just screams. But then again, it's hard to stay here, because well, she's screaming all the time.

Sometime shortly after that conversation (after I'd already mapped out this blog in my mind), I laid a screaming, "INCONSOLABLE" Anna onto her elephant gym. What do you know, she calmed down, and spent the next few hours smiling and cooing all over the place. She went to bed without any trouble, and slept 9 hours straight. She woke up to nurse, but that only took about 30 minutes, then went back to sleep for another 3 hours. That's right...a 12 1/2 hour night! After that, she was awake for an hour, would yawn, I'd swaddle her, and with maybe one or two tears, she'd be out. Asleep. In her crib. For almost exactly two hours. ALL. DAY. LONG. The little girl slept for about 20 of the past 24 hours.

Bedtime was a bit of a different story, but that's okay...I was ready for some snuggle time! She was fussy, but not inconsolable like yesterday. She woke up from nap #3 of the day at about 7, was yawning by 7:30, when I decided to give her a bath. She hated the bath tonight (I guess if you're a baby and spend 20 hours sleeping, and only a few seconds fussing, you've got to cry sometime, right?) After her bath, she wanted to be sleepy, but wasn't quite. She nursed on and off for about 2 hours and finally let me put her in the crib at 10.

Adele never had a day remotely close to this one....ever. And the best part is, while today was definitely Anna's sleepiest yet, she's had other days where she sleeps the majority of the time too...just never in such a pattern for the entire day.

I guess time will tell if Anna is indeed our "angel" baby, or if she's just well...related to her sister.

What do YOU think?

Where to Start?!?!

I have dozens of cute pictures, even more cute stories, and two sleeping beauties, so I guess it's time to play a little "catch-up"!

Last Thursday Adele, Anna and I were the first participants for "Storytime" at Mudsocks' new location (I know, I know, be sure to write that one down in the history books!) Anna screamed the whole time, but Adele was great. We had to interrupt the story for a potty break, but since she was the only kid there, it didn't seem to matter. It's nice to know that there's a "storytime" two minutes from our house that is free and that I don't have to pre-register for (what's up with having to pre-register for storytime at the library?), in case there are days that I just need to get out of the house in the fall! And since they're not too busy, it won't matter if Anna is a bit fussy!

Then, last Friday I took the girls to our first "playdate" with some (old and new) friends from church. Anna was like Jekyll and Hyde-sleeping or screaming! We stayed later than the other guests, so Skii (the hostess) got some extra snuggle time with Anna, and Adele had a blast playing with Ivan's toys. We had the opportunity to go to another playdate with the same group today, but I had two rough nights' sleep in a row, and a migraine so we stayed home.

Saturday was the Fishers Freedom Fest...our favorite weekend in the summertime. At Daddy's suggestion, I walked the 5K event with my friend Amber (Evan's mom). He stayed home with the girls. Amber and I walked it in under an hour, which was pretty satisfying, since I wasn't quite 6 weeks post-partum yet. It was nice to have an hour (plus time to walk to the park and back) away from the girls, and I think it's one of the only times Amber and I have been together without our kids since we met in grad school!

After the girls woke up we headed over to the Freedom Fest. It was HOT. 90-plus degrees. We managed to spend a few minutes in the childrens' tent, eat lunch and look at a few of the craft booths before heading back home to the air conditioning. It wasn't as kid-friendly as it seemed last year, especially with a screaming Anna in the baby Bjorn, but Daddy got his Kettle Corn, so all was well!

On Sunday, we decided to stay away from the crowds at the Freedom Fest, so Daddy and Adele introduced Anna and I to a new park in Noblesville. It was a blast! I still can't believe how HUGE the slides were, but Daddy says they're slow, since they're usually wet (because of the splash park). Adele had a blast, and Anna wasn't a total grump.

Anna likes it too!

Adele's "princess smile" at lunch (weirdo!):

On the equipment...Look at those HUGE slides!"

Monday through Thursday brought Memaw and DeeDee, along with the realization that Anna needs sleep. A LOT of sleep. She slept about 20 hours each day this week, and was only awake for about an hour at a time. If she went past that hour of "awake" time, she got fussy...like colicky fussy, only she's not really colicky. If I can get her swaddled and asleep right when she starts yawning, she takes the best naps (in her crib!). If not, it's cat naps between ear-piercing screams while being held...and bounced and rocked. It's not pretty. Too bad Memaw and DeeDee had to be here while we figured that out. Tuesday we took the girls to the zoo, and it just happened that Super Why was there as well. Adele managed to get a nice big hug in as he walked past the zoo entrance!

Anna all gussied up for Memaw and DeeDee:

Wednesday was our anniversary, and after a trip to Conner Prairie for everyone except Anna and I, Memaw and DeeDee graciously volunteered to babysit the girls while we escaped both for dinner, and then for band practice at church. Their ears are probably still ringing, but DeeDee DID manage to get Anna to sleep...and keep her that way, for half an hour just as we got home from church! (We stopped home in-between so that I could feed Anna-she hasn't really needed to take a bottle yet, and we wanted to do everything we could to leave a happy baby with our babysitters!)

Here is DeeDee "sleeping" Adele after babysitting her for the first time:
And here she is "Sleeping" Anna on Wednesday:
Just to be fair, and to show that she hasn't lost her touch, here's Adele sleeping on the couch by DeeDee on Thursday morning (she was up at 6:30, but DeeDee convinced her to catch a few more zzz's:

After Memaw and DeeDee left, we watched Laureli, our neighbor's two-year-old for a few hours. It was actually nice having a playmate to keep Adele company, but I'm not sure how I could've done it without Brian (although, I did have them all by myself for about 45-minutes) because Anna needed to be put down for two naps, and her "nap routine" can take a little while still.

Today was pretty low-key as well, but somehow it worked out that the girls napped at opposite times, so I was able to have some good snuggle time with each girl, separately, which I loved, despite my poor migraine! We got Anna's birth certificate and ate lunch (well, a mid-afternoon snack, really) at Buffalo Wild Wings. I got both girls bathed, then Daddy left for a concert, and I did bedtime with virtually NO tears from ANYONE! Okay, there was SOME crying, but it was really nothing compared to what we've had from either of them in the evening lately! Anna was insanely happy (is there such a thing?) tonight...a first...ever, I think, and Adele was just plain tired. She moaned a little, but didn't really cry when I left her room after saying goodnight.

And just for fun, some more pictures:

Pretty in Pink

I couldn't resist taking these last night-Anna does look pretty in pink, doesn't she. (I guess since her "favorite" blankie is green, I don't have many "pink" pictures of our newest little princess...

I Was Right...

About the sumo wrestler thingy...

Weighing in at 11 lbs 8 oz, Anna is officially in the 99th percentile for her age! (That's up from the 75th percentile at birth!) I knew she was a chunker!

Some Bath Time pictures to show off those rolls:

Dr. Freeman told Anna that I must make whipping cream instead of milk!

Conner Prairie...again!

Yesterday Anna, Adele and I took our friends Amber and Evan to Conner Prairie. Adele wore her "Cinderella" dress and was so excited to dance with her prince, Evan. The two toddlers were so cute exploring everything. They were also very well behaved! Anna was pretty good except for when we were eating, and even then she took a nap after a while so I could finish my sandwich.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to take as many pictures as I would have liked. Here are the two that I got:
Playing with the doll house (Evan was organizing the items into different compartments):

Amber took a picture of both kids looking at the "ball"...by the time I grabbed my camera, they were done. If you look carefully, you can see Evan's foot in the bottom left corner:

Such is life...I'm hoping Amber will post her pictures on her blog too (Click on the "Evan" link on the side of my blog) because I know she got some great ones!

Anna and the Elephant

Anna has started to be "alert" (and happy!) for longer periods of time lately, and she really seems to enjoy playing on her "Elephant" gym:
